Our Lady of the Assumption Church

In the original center of the town, in the current Plaza de la Iglesia, is the most outstanding religious building in the entire Serranía Conquense, known as the “Cathedral of the Sierra”. Its construction dates back to the 15th century and has a Gothic style, with three naves. It was erected over another previous building, or more probably as a remodeling of the same, since it still preserves the eaves and the flared windows in the first height of the exterior walls of the previous Romanesque style.

In the interior, the baptismal font of the XVI century stands out, of a classic renaissance style, located in the baptistery. In the main altar is the imposing neo-Gothic altarpiece of polychrome wood, carved in the 50s of the twentieth century, which came to replace the Plateresque altarpiece, the work of Diego de Villadiego, disappeared during the Civil War and of which a drawing is preserved. To the right of the main altar is the chapel of the Virgen de la Rosa, patron saint of Beteta, along with an exhibition of mantles that she wears depending on the festivity of the moment. Also of interest is the Mudejar staircase, located at the top of the choir, and a set of four tombstones that mark the graves of the families Carrillo de Albornoz, Ariza and others unidentified, among which could be that of a bishop of the cathedral of Tui, who died while spending a few days at the Solán de Cabras Spa and was buried in this church.
